Boundary Detection Through Surround Modulation

چکیده
Edges are key components of any visual scene to the extent that we can recognise objects merely by their silhouettes. Human visual system captures edge information using neurons that are sensitive to both intensity discontinuities and particular orientations. The “classical approach” assumes that these cells are only responsive to the stimulus present within their receptive fields (RF), however, recent studies demonstrate that surrounding regions and interareal feedback connections influence their responses significantly. In this work we propose a biologically-inspired edge detection model based on these physiological findings.

Cross- and iso- oriented surrounds modulate the contrast response function: the effect of surround contrast.
The detectability and appearance of visual targets can be modulated by surround stimuli. In this study we asked how cross- and iso-oriented surrounds modulate contrast detection and discrimination in foveal vision. We systematically measured the Threshold-versus-Contrast (TvC) functions over a wide range of pedestal and surround contrasts. Our results show that cross-oriented surrounds lower th...
متن کاملDynamics of extraclassical surround modulation in three types of V1 neurons.
Visual stimuli outside of the classical receptive field (CRF) can influence the response of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1). While recording single units in cat, we presented drifting sinusoidal gratings in circular apertures of different sizes to investigate this extraclassical surround modulation over time. For the full 2-s stimulus time course, three types of neurons were found: 1) 68%...
متن کاملBinocular interactions in center-surround modulation: measurement and modeling
The responses of neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) are modulated by stimuli outside their classical receptive fields. This same phenomenon, called center-surround modulation, has also been found in psychophysical studies in cases where a visual target’s detectability is influenced by its surroundings. However, whether the surround modulation occurs only after binocular integration (at o...
متن کاملContour and boundary detection improved by surround suppression of texture edges
We propose a computational step, called surround suppression, to improve detection of object contours and region boundaries in natural scenes. This step is inspired by the mechanism of non-classical receptive field inhibition that is exhibited by most orientation selective neurons in the primary visual cortex and that influences the perception of groups of edges or lines. We illustrate the prin...
متن کاملDopamine Regulation of GABAA Receptors Contributes to Light/Dark Modulation of the ON-Cone Bipolar Cell Receptive Field Surround in the Retina.
Cone bipolar cells are interneurons that receive synaptic input from cone photoreceptor cells and provide the output of the first synaptic layer of the retina. These cells exhibit center-surround receptive fields, a prototype of lateral inhibition between neighboring sensory cells in which stimulation of the receptive field center excites the cell whereas stimulation of the surrounding region l...
